How far are your steps?
Step counters report steps, but most of us think in miles or kilometres. The link between them is your stride length: the distance from one foot landing to the other foot landing. Taller people and faster walkers usually take longer steps, so they cover more ground for the same count.
This steps to miles calculator converts steps into distance and distance into steps. Because stride varies so much, it also lets you measure your own, which makes every other answer far more accurate.
How to use it
- Choose Steps to distance, Distance to steps, or Measure my stride.
- To measure your stride, walk a known distance, such as one lap of a 400 m track (0.25 miles is close), counting your steps.
- Enter the steps or distance and your stride length in inches or centimetres.
- Read the distance in miles and kilometres, or the steps for your distance.
The formula
distance = steps × stride length
steps = distance ÷ stride length
stride = distance walked ÷ steps counted
1 mile = 63,360 inches = 160,934.4 cm
Inches and centimetres convert exactly (1 inch is 2.54 cm), so the only uncertain number is your stride. Walking and running strides differ, so measure the one you want to track.
Worked example: 10,000 steps
- Stride: 30 inches
- Total: 10,000 × 30 = 300,000 inches
- In miles: 300,000 ÷ 63,360 = 4.73 miles
- In kilometres: 7.62 km
With a 30 inch stride, 10,000 steps is 4.73 miles, or 7.62 km, and a mile takes 2,112 steps. With a shorter stride the same count covers less ground, so measure yours if the answer matters to you.
Steps per mile by stride
| Stride | Steps per mile | Steps per km |
|---|---|---|
| 24 in (61 cm) | 2,640 | 1,640 |
| 27 in (69 cm) | 2,347 | 1,458 |
| 30 in (76 cm) | 2,112 | 1,312 |
| 33 in (84 cm) | 1,920 | 1,193 |
| 36 in (91 cm) | 1,760 | 1,094 |
A one foot difference in stride changes a mile by hundreds of steps, which is why a single steps per mile figure can only ever be a rough guide.
Why counts and distances disagree
Step counters miss some steps and count some movements that are not steps, such as a bumpy bus ride or waving your arms. Your stride also changes through the day: shorter on stairs, in crowds and when tired, longer on a brisk open path. Measuring your stride on the kind of walk you usually do, and using that figure here, gives the most useful distance.
Making steps count
- Phones and watches estimate stride too; entering your measured stride in their settings can improve them.
- Steps at a brisk pace count as moderate activity for most adults.
- For runs, the running pace calculator turns time and distance into pace.
- The calorie calculator estimates the energy you use each day.
Frequently asked questions
How many steps are in a mile?
It depends on your stride. With a 30 inch stride, a mile is 2,112 steps; with a 24 inch stride it is 2,640, and with a 36 inch stride it is 1,760. Measure your stride with the third mode above, and the calculator gives your own steps per mile.
How many miles is 10,000 steps?
With a 30 inch stride, 10,000 steps is about 4.73 miles, or 7.62 kilometres. A shorter stride covers less: at 26 inches it is about 4.1 miles. Enter your own step count and stride above for an answer that fits you, rather than an average.
How do I measure my stride length?
Walk a distance you know, such as a lap of a 400 metre track, counting every step at your normal pace. Divide the distance by the number of steps. Choose Measure my stride above, enter the distance and the count, and the calculator gives your stride in inches and centimetres.
Is a step the same as a stride?
In everyday use and on most step counters, yes: one step is one foot landing in front of the other. In running and medicine, a stride sometimes means two steps, a full cycle back to the same foot. This calculator uses the single step meaning.
