Yearly salary

Hourly or yearly, see both

Job ads switch between hourly rates and yearly salaries as if they were the same thing, and comparing them in your head is a pain. Is 34 an hour better than 68,000 a year? This calculator turns one into the other and fills in everything between: monthly, every two weeks, weekly and daily pay.

It works for freelancers too. If you know the yearly income you want, flip it to hourly and you have a starting point for your rate.

How to use it

  1. Choose Hourly to salary or Salary to hourly.
  2. Enter the hourly rate or the yearly salary.
  3. Set the hours you work in a normal week. Full time is usually 37.5 to 40.
  4. Set the paid weeks a year. Leave it at 52 if your holidays are paid; lower it if they are not.
  5. Read the answer and the pay for each period below it.

How the conversion works

yearly salary = hourly rate × hours a week × weeks a year
hourly rate = yearly salary ÷ (hours a week × weeks a year)
monthly = yearly ÷ 12, every two weeks = yearly ÷ 26, weekly = yearly ÷ 52

A full-time year of 40 hours and 52 weeks has 2,080 paid hours. That number is the key to almost every conversion: multiply an hourly rate by 2,080 to get a salary, divide a salary by 2,080 to get an hourly rate.

Worked example: 75,000 a year is how much an hour?

  • Paid hours: 40 × 52 = 2,080 a year
  • Hourly rate: $75,000 ÷ 2,080 = $36.06
  • Monthly: $75,000 ÷ 12 = $6,250.00
  • Every two weeks: $75,000 ÷ 26 = $2,884.62

So $75,000 a year is about $36.06 an hour for a full-time, 40 hour week. On the same basis, 65,000 a year is $31.25 an hour. A 37.5 hour week makes each hour worth a little more: $75,000 is about $38.46 an hour.

Common salaries and hourly rates

Yearly salary and hourly rate at 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year
YearlyHourlyMonthly
30,00014.422,500
40,00019.233,333.33
50,00024.044,166.67
65,00031.255,416.67
75,00036.066,250
100,00048.088,333.33

A quick estimate: double the hourly rate and add three zeros. $20 an hour is about $40,000 a year. It works because 2,080 is close to 2,000.

Things that change the real picture

  • Paid and unpaid time off. Salaried staff are often paid for holidays; many hourly workers are not. Lower the weeks to match.
  • Overtime. Regular overtime raises the yearly figure for hourly workers. The overtime calculator works out a week with extra hours.
  • Benefits. Health cover, paid leave and other extras from an employer can be worth a lot. Compare offers with those in mind, not just the pay.
  • Freelance rates. If you set your own hourly rate, remember that not every working hour is billable. Admin, sales and quiet weeks all eat into the 2,080.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert an hourly wage to a yearly salary?

Multiply the hourly rate by the hours you work each week, then by the weeks you are paid each year. At 25 an hour, 40 hours a week and 52 weeks, that is 25 × 40 × 52 = 52,000 a year. Change the hours or weeks above if your situation is different.

65k a year is how much an hour?

At 40 hours a week and 52 paid weeks, 65,000 a year is 65,000 ÷ 2,080 = 31.25 an hour. At 37.5 hours a week it is about 33.33 an hour. Choose Salary to hourly, enter 65,000 and your usual hours, and the calculator gives the exact rate along with the monthly and weekly pay.

How do I calculate an hourly paycheck?

Multiply your hourly rate by the hours you worked in the pay period. Forty hours at 22 an hour is 880 for a week, or 1,760 for two weeks, before tax. If you worked overtime, add the extra hours at the overtime rate. The time card calculator totals hours from start and end times.

How many paid hours are in a year?

A full-time schedule of 40 hours a week for 52 weeks is 2,080 hours. At 37.5 hours a week it is 1,950. If you take two weeks of unpaid leave, take 80 hours off the 40-hour figure. Many payroll systems use 2,080 as the standard when converting salaries to hourly rates.

How much is 20 an hour a year?

At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, 20 an hour is 41,600 a year, about 3,466.67 a month and 800 a week before tax. The quick check is to double the rate and add three zeros, which gives 40,000, close enough for a first estimate.
