Age difference

The exact gap between two birthdays

Subtracting birth years gives a rough answer, but it can be out by almost a whole year depending on the months. The exact age gap between two people, siblings, a couple, a parent and child, or two historical figures, needs the full dates.

This age difference calculator takes two birth dates and tells you who is older, by how many years, months and days, and the same gap in total days, weeks and months. It counts real calendar months and leap years, so the answer is exact.

How to use it

  1. Enter the first person’s birth date.
  2. Enter the second person’s birth date. The order does not matter.
  3. Read who is older and the gap in years, months and days.
  4. Look below for the same gap in days, weeks, months and decimal years.

How the gap is counted

start from the earlier birth date
count whole years, then whole months, then the days left over
total days = later date − earlier date

Months are counted on the real calendar, so a month can be anywhere from 28 to 31 days long. That is why a gap in total days does not divide neatly into months, and why the years, months and days form is the one people usually mean.

Worked example: 14 May 1990 and 2 November 1993

  • From 14 May 1990 to 14 May 1993: 3 years
  • From 14 May 1993 to 14 October 1993: 5 months
  • From 14 October to 2 November: 19 days
  • In total: 1,268 days, or 181 weeks and 1 day

The first person is older by 3 years, 5 months, 19 days. Their ages will always differ by 3 years for most of each year, and by 4 years from the older person’s birthday until the younger person’s.

Why the gap in years changes during the year

Ages through 2026 for the example
DateFirst personSecond personDifference
1 March 202635323 years
14 May 202636324 years
2 November 202636333 years

The real gap never changes; only the whole number ages do. Between the two birthdays each year, the age difference looks one year bigger.

Where an exact gap matters

Family trees and history projects often need the exact gap between relatives. Schools and clubs sometimes group children by date of birth, so a gap of a few days can decide which year someone joins. For twins born either side of midnight, the calculator shows a gap of one day even though they share a birth year.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the age difference between two people?

Start from the earlier birth date and count forward to the later one: first whole years, then whole months, then the remaining days. From 14 May 1990 to 2 November 1993 is 3 years, 5 months and 19 days. Enter both dates above for an exact answer.

Why does our age difference seem to change during the year?

Your real age gap stays fixed, but whole number ages change on different days. Between the older person’s birthday and the younger person’s, the older one has already added a year, so the difference in whole years looks one bigger. It returns after the younger person’s birthday.

Does the calculator count leap years?

Yes. It uses the real calendar, so 29 February is counted in leap years and every month has its true length. That keeps the total days exact, and it means the years, months and days answer matches what you would count on a calendar.

How many days apart are we?

The calculator shows the exact number of days between the two birth dates, along with weeks and months. For the example dates in May 1990 and November 1993 that is 1,268 days, which is 181 weeks and 1 day, or about 3.47 years.
